In a world often divided by borders, Arun Thadagath dreams of unity — of a ‘world sans frontiers.’ This visionary cyclist from Kerala, India, believes in prioritising humanity’s basic needs over defence spending and reviving ancient trade routes like the Spice Route to foster global harmony as he travels around the world for smiles, world peace.
With his motto, “From Paris to India,” Arun is embarking on an extraordinary journey to promote sustainable tourism, cultural exchange and the power of human connection.
Arun’s journey is about more than miles travelled; it’s a testament to his philosophy that unity can be achieved through simple acts of kindness and shared stories. His odyssey began at the Paris Olympics, sparked by a serendipitous encounter with an Indian woman who offered him an extra ticket to the event. That single moment of generosity has inspired his trek through 12,000 kilometres and counting 27 nations, across Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Türkiye and the UAE, before reaching Oman.
“Oman’s unique beauty and hospitality make it a significant part of my journey,” Arun shared after spending two weeks exploring Muscat and Salalah, immersing himself in the culture and landscapes.

At the heart of Arun’s philosophy is the idea of a world sans frontiers — a world without borders. He advocates for prioritising humanity’s basic needs over defence spending and believes in reviving ancient trade routes like the Spice Route to foster global unity. A strong proponent of sustainable tourism, Arun calls for a dedicated cycling infrastructure connecting the coastal regions of Mena (Middle East and North Africa), similar to the EuroVelo routes in Europe. This could encourage eco-friendly travel, promote healthy lifestyles and boost regional economies by diversifying beyond petroleum.
“Imagine a cycling route from Oman to Europe via the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye,” Arun says. “It would attract travellers, boost tourism and strengthen cultural ties.” He envisions such infrastructure supporting international cycling competitions like the Tour de France and the Olympics, fostering both tourism and community well-being.

Arun’s journey also serves as a call to action. He reflects on his travels across India and Asean countries during the Covid-19 pandemic, promoting the values of unity and shared humanity. His ongoing adventure is self-funded through a bank loan, a bold decision he likens to investing in a home or car. However, Arun is now seeking sponsors to support the continuation of his journey.
His bike of choice is the Surly Disc Trucker, an American-made touring bike designed for long-distance travel. Priced over RO 1,200, it is built to carry heavy loads and withstand the demands of extended travel. While heavier than typical bikes, it is known for its exceptional build quality and ease of maintenance. Arun purchased it without seeing it in person, trusting its reputation among Western bike tourers. “It was a wild decision, but the best happened,” he says. Powered solely by his willpower, the bike symbolises his resilience and determination.

After Oman, Arun will continue his journey through the GCC, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Türkiye, before heading into Europe. His route will take him through Italy, Spain, Scandinavia and Central Asia, culminating in Nepal and India by 2026.
“This isn’t just a trip; it’s a lifelong investment in experiences,” Arun says. “Cycling offers a unique way to connect with others. On a bicycle, you’re seen and see people eye to eye. It’s the best way to build bridges.”
Through his incredible journey, Arun Thadagath is not just pedaling across continents but weaving a narrative of unity, sustainability and hope for a better world.
