Muscat: The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, represented by the General Directorate of Youth, announced the winners of the 2024 Tawasul Short Films Award during a ceremony held at Vox Cinemas in Mall of Oman on Monday. Mohammed bin Said al Balushi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Information, presided over the event.

The film 'Sylinder' claimed first place, earning a RO 5,000 prize. 'Soul Bags' won second place with RO 4,000, while 'Shipment' secured third place with RO 3,000. 'Sa’l' and 'Return' earned fourth and fifth places, respectively, with prizes of RO 2,000 and RO 1,000.

Dr Abdullah al Muaini, chairman of the judging committee, praised the qualitative growth in the second edition, noting this year’s broader exploration of national, societal and individual themes. The event featured film excerpts, including a special screening of 'Sylinder'.

Mohammed bin Said al Balushi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Information, honoured the winners, participants and judges for their contributions to Oman's cinematic culture. This year’s competition saw 24 films submitted, all Omani productions not previously screened or entered in other competitions.

Sorour al Khalili, director of 'Sylinder', shared that the film reflects personal challenges faced by Omani youth. It tells the story of an individual’s journey towards self-discovery and the importance of coexistence.

Laura al Siyabi, Head of the Cinema Department, highlighted the competition's role in developing young film-makers and fostering creativity.
