MUSCAT: Bahrain held their nerves for a thrilling 3-2 win against higher-ranked Saudi Arabia to top Group B in the 26th Arabian Gulf Cup in Kuwait City on Sunday night. In the Group B opener at the Jaber Al Ahmad International Stadium, Bahrain took the lead as Mahdi Abduljabbar’s well-executed header from a corner landed in the top corner of the Saudi net in the 19th minute. Star player Mahdi Humaidan consolidated the lead in the 38th minute with a precise strike, capitalising on a defensive lapse by Saudi Arabia. Bahrain, who had held Saudi Arabia to a goalless draw at their home in the World Cup qualifiers, led 2-0 at half-time. In the second half, Saudi Arabia, coached by Hervé Renard of France, mounted a spirited fightback. In the 73rd minute, Saudi Arabia’s Musab al Juwayr reduced the deficit with a close-range finish after a quick attack. As Saudi players regrouped to mount more attacks into Bahraini territory, Bahrain struck again to restore the two-goal cushion. Substitute Vincent Emmanuel’s first touch—a free kick from near the centre—was well-received by Bahrain's Mohammed Marhoon, whose high shot from outside the box found the net past an advancing Saudi keeper Nawaf al Aqidi in the 76th minute. Disappointed by conceding the third goal, Saudi Arabia continued their attacks as the match saw quick exchanges and counterattacks. In the 86th minute, Saudi Arabia earned a penalty for a handball near the goalpost. Saleh al Shehri, who earned the spot kick, made no mistake, bringing the score to 3-2. Saudi players continued their attempts for an equaliser, but Bahrain goalkeeper Sayed Mohammed Jaafar and the defence stood firm, earning Bahrain full three points. With this win, Bahrain sit atop Group B on goal difference, edging past Iraq, who secured a 1-0 victory against Yemen earlier in the day. Bahrain head coach Dragan Talajic expressed satisfaction after the winning start. “This tournament is entirely different from the World Cup qualifiers. We need to play for a win in every match as it is a combined competition.” The Croatian coach emphasised the importance of a strong start and the need for quality performances. Saudi Arabia’s Renard acknowledged the challenges ahead for the team. “We had a tough match against Bahrain. However, we are here to participate effectively and win. This tournament provides a great platform to work with the players and prepare them for future competitions.” The French coach highlighted the need for improvement and focus in upcoming matches to boost Saudi Arabia’s chances of advancing in the tournament.
