ROME: With France and Germany rocked by political turmoil, Italy's Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday lauded the stability of her government, saying it gave her a "precious card to play" in EU affairs. Addressing parliament ahead of a summit of EU leaders later this week, the prime minister hailed Italy's "extraordinary" stability compared to past Italian governments, and "also compared to the political turbulence that several large European nations are facing".

Meloni, the leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, expressed hope her country's relative lack of turmoil would lead to increased foreign investment, and a reduction in the "brain drain" of talent abroad. "The added value of this stability is certainly a precious card to play also within the European Council," she said. A member of Meloni's party, Raffaele Fitto, has just secured a top job in the new executive of the EU, the European Commission. Speaking to MPs on Tuesday, she urged a "pragmatic, constructive and open approach with the new Trump administration". — AFP
