National Museum hosts cultural events to promote Russian language

MUSCAT: The National Museum, represented by its Learning Centre and supported by BP Oman, is currently hosting a series of global cultural events titled 'Russian Express' to promote and spread the Russian language.

The two-day programme began with the opening of the 'Russia' exhibition. The exhibition showcases photographs of Russia’s natural landscapes, models of wooden and stone architecture, and unique perspectives of Russian cities. Additionally, an evening concert titled 'Vecherka', a folkloric gathering that introduced attendees to an ancient Russian leisure tradition, also took place.

The evening also featured a musical performance by the State Academic Northern Russian Folk Choir, led by Svetlana Ignatieva — an honoured artist of the Russian Federation, and professor at the Department of Choral and Solo Folk Singing at the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music.

Founded in 1926 in the city of Veliky Ustyug, the choir is deeply rooted in Pomor traditions and performed exclusively by women’s voices.

Alexander Sumin, a lecturer at the Russian Language and Culture Institute at Moscow State University (Lomonosov), delivered a lecture on Monday for beginners in learning the Russian language at the National Museum. The lecture also focused on the works of poet Alexander Pushkin, whose 225th birth anniversary is being celebrated this year.

This project is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and organised in the Sultanate of Oman in collaboration with the governmental entity 'Rosconcert'.

These events mark the conclusion of the 2024 edition of the global cultural events series 'Russian Express', an international cultural initiative launched by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation in collaboration with the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2023.

The programme aims to promote the Russian language through educational programmes and musical performances by Russia's national folk choir, offering people in foreign countries an opportunity to experience the richness of the Russian language and its cultural treasures.

The project was successfully implemented in 2023 in Tanzania, Myanmar, Venezuela and Morocco, and in 2024 in Brazil and Laos. - ONA
