When things go against your wish

Life is full of tough challenges, many of which are unexpected — and many of which can be difficult to overcome without inner strength, effective coping skills, and support.

Life is an uncertain roller coaster. You can choose to embrace it and enjoy the ride, joyfully learning from your experiences along the way, or you can choose to rebel against all of life’s challenges, hating every moment of your journey. The latter deprives you of growth and development, while the former gives you the opportunity to learn from those challenges and become a better person by having experienced them.

Challenges come in different forms. Whether you lose your job, an opportunity, or a relationship, loss is an unavoidable part of life.

Regardless of how it happens, loss marks one of life’s biggest challenges. It can be unexpected and disruptive. However, loss also gives you the opportunity to reflect on what is truly important, allowing you to keep moving forward.

Sometimes, we are tested not to show our weaknesses, but to discover our strengths. What really matters is that you don’t let these challenges, or anyone break you down. You must stand on your own feet and stand up for yourself. There are those who would give anything to see you fail, but you must never give them satisfaction. Hold your head high, smile, and stand your ground.

In this regard, Mahatma Gandhi wisely advised, “You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty. Honest differences are often a healthy sign of progress.” One might feel exhausted, tired of all the anxiety, negativity, and stress. Too often, the mind is consumed with demanding thoughts, and every muscle in the body seems to be under pressure. This really hurts; you feel constant tension and fatigue.

No matter where you find yourself, there is always room for improvement. Challenges in life are inevitable, but they can be used to your advantage. Each challenge presents an opportunity for personal growth and self-improvement. Always remember that our minds are incredibly powerful — they can either bring us down or lift us up in an instant. How we think about things changes everything.

You may not be responsible for everything that happened to you in the past, or everything that is happening to you now, but you are responsible for undoing the thinking patterns that these circumstances create. It is all about thinking better so you can ultimately live better.

The key is to understand that no matter what happens, you can choose your response, and that response dictates pretty much everything that follows. Truly, the greatest weapon you have against anxiety, negativity, and stress is your ability to choose one present thought over another. In other words, you need to train your mind to make the best of what you have in front of you, even when it is far less than you expected.

Yes, you can change the way you think! And once you do, you can master a new way of being. As Leonardo da Vinci, an Italian artist and engineer, said, “I love those who can smile in trouble.” You must let go and accept the feeling of not knowing exactly where you are going next. It is when you are suspended in the air, with no destination in sight, that you force your wings to fully open, so you can fly. What truly matters is spreading your wings, for the winds will carry you forward.

Always remember that life will attempt to break you down sometimes; nothing and no one can completely protect you from this reality. Thus, you must stand back up and put yourself out there again. All it takes is time, effort, and patience. Do not let disappointments overwhelm you, and never let stress define who you are.
