There is significant potential for collaboration between Japan and Oman in various sectors, according to a top official of the Japan Cooperation Centre for the Middle East (JCCME), a key institution tasking with promoting Japanese trade and investment in the Mena region.

In an interview with Observer, Omote Takashi, Representative Executive Director of JCCME, highlighted the promising opportunities for collaboration between the two countries. Takashi is a member of a high-level Japanese delegation representing eight major corporations and institutions taking part in the Oman-Japan Business Forum currently underway in Muscat.

The official emphasised that the strong participation from Oman creates a valuable opportunity to accelerate engagement with more Japanese companies in the future. “To be frank, I was initially unaware of the substantial participation from the Omani side. However, this experience has shown that with better planning and increased awareness, we could organise larger Japanese delegations next time.”

The high level of interest from Oman highlights the potential for stronger bilateral ties. Takashi added, “If Japanese companies and the government recognise this enthusiasm, it could lead to greater acknowledgment of the opportunities available in Oman. This aligns with the broader strategies of both countries to enhance industrial development and future prosperity.”

However, Takashi pointed out that one challenge is the limited understanding Japanese companies currently have of Oman’s business environment. He explained, “There seems to be limited awareness of Oman’s economic vision and priorities, such as Oman Vision 2040, which emphasises innovation and food security. These are areas where Japan, with its strong ecological expertise and technological advancements, can make significant contributions.”

For Omani business people, Takashi highlighted the importance of actively promoting Oman’s unique advantages and potential. “Raising awareness among Japanese business leaders about the opportunities in Oman should be a priority,” he said. This can be achieved by hosting more events, fostering direct dialogue and creating platforms for interaction between businesses from both countries.

Reflecting on his experience in Oman, Takashi said, “Visiting Oman reveals distinct differences and unique opportunities that set it apart from other countries. This is my second visit and even in limited interactions, I’ve noticed the significant potential for collaboration. Direct communication and face-to-face dialogue are essential to bridging the gap and creating meaningful connections.”

While he acknowledged that opportunities for such exchanges remain limited, he expressed optimism that increasing these interactions will have a lasting positive impact.

“In summary, Oman should focus on showcasing its business environment, aligning with Japan’s strengths in innovation and technology, and facilitating more opportunities for direct dialogue. These efforts will strengthen ties and pave the way for more significant business partnerships between the two countries,” Takashi concluded.
