Muscat: The Environment Authority issued a decision to establish a protected zone in the Al Sharqiyah South Governorate under the name Ghaf Tree Reserve. Managed by modern effective methods, the new reserve will prepare and implement programmes designed to combat desertification and improve soil quality to protect the Ghaf trees areas and expand the vegetation cover by planting local trees and plants in select areas to stimulate biodiversity.

The new reserve will adopt programmes to monitor and protect biodiversity, reduce negative human impacts on the reserve as well as protect endangered species. The reserve will also seek to provide natural water sources to support trees, plants and wildlife, developing systems to monitor and manage sustainable water consumption in coordination with relevant authorities.

In addition to tapping carbon credits stored in trees and other natural resources through the technologies utilized in the reserve, modern technologies will be used to manage the reserve and enhance the growth of trees and plants to ensure the availability of carbon credits. Renewable energy technologies will also be applied and used in projects located within the reserve in coordination with the relevant authorities.
