MUSCAT: “Leadership is not just about managing a company; it’s about creating value and inspiring change,” says Moosa al Subhi, Group CEO of Al Sahari Oil Services Co SAOC. In an interview with the Observer, Al Subhi reflected on his journey to the helm of two successful enterprises, the challenges he has faced, and the milestones achieved under his leadership.
FROM PASSION TO PURPOSE
Al Subhi’s journey to becoming a CEO was shaped by his deep interest in problem-solving and his desire to create meaningful impact. “I’ve always been driven by a passion for innovation and strategic thinking,” he explains. “Over the years, I embraced diverse roles that challenged me to grow, lead teams, and deliver impactful results. What inspired me most was the opportunity to lead with purpose—to create a positive impact not just for the organisation, but also for the community and stakeholders.”
TURNING CHALLENGES INTO OPPORTUNITIES
Transforming company culture and regaining trust after a period of underperformance were among the most significant hurdles Al Subhi encountered. “One of the biggest challenges was shifting the company culture toward innovation, collaboration, and results-driven values,” he recalls. To address this, he introduced a competency-based framework, transparent processes, and targeted training programs to align the team with the company’s vision.
Externally, the focus was on exceeding client expectations and restoring stakeholder confidence. “We prioritised consistency, improved service quality, and fostered open communication. Internally, we built trust by creating an inclusive and empowering environment. Overcoming these challenges was pivotal in restoring confidence and positioning the company for sustainable growth.”
ACHIEVEMENTS THAT REDEFINE SUCCESS
Under Al Subhi’s leadership, Al Sahari Oil Services Co SAOC achieved several notable milestones, including expanding into new markets and implementing innovative technologies. “We turned the company around from losses to profitability, achieving a net profit margin exceeding 30%,” he shares proudly.
Operational efficiency was significantly improved through digital transformation and the adoption of a robust Key Performance Indicator (KPI) system. “These changes not only optimised costs but also reduced time wastage and improved alignment with organisational goals,” he says.
However, his proudest achievement transcends financial success. “What holds special significance for me is creating a healthy working environment where everyone feels like part of one family. The respect and trust of my team mean more than any financial metric.”
SHAPING CULTURE AND INSPIRING THE FUTURE
As a leader, Al Subhi believes his role extends beyond driving performance to shaping the company’s culture. “I see myself as a custodian of our values and culture,” he says. “It’s about fostering an environment where innovation thrives and every individual feels valued. A strong culture drives engagement, productivity, and ultimately, success.”
Al Subhi is equally passionate about mentoring the next generation of leaders. “My advice to aspiring CEOs is to stay curious, embrace change, and prioritise people. Leadership isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about asking the right questions and building a team that can find solutions together.”
A VISION FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Looking ahead, Al Subhi envisions Al Sahari Oil Services Co SAOC as leaders in innovation and sustainability. “Our goal is to set benchmarks in operational excellence and environmental stewardship,” he asserts. He also predicts a future where the industry is defined by collaboration, technological advancements, and a commitment to sustainable practices that balance growth with responsibility.
BALANCING LEADERSHIP AND WELL-BEING
Balancing the demands of leadership with personal growth is something Al Subhi takes seriously. “Intentionality is key,” he explains. “I prioritise time for reflection, continuous learning, and maintaining my physical and mental well-being. Whether it’s through reading, networking, or spending quality time with family, these activities recharge me and allow me to lead effectively.”
For Al Subhi, leadership is more than a title—it’s a responsibility to inspire, innovate, and create lasting value. His journey is a testament to the power of purpose-driven leadership and its potential to transform not just organisations, but entire industries.
