Oman has 191 water dams with a total storage capacity of 357.7 million cubic metres, according to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources.

These dams have stored over 3 billion cubic metres of floodwater, highlighting their importance in supporting agriculture and the environment.

New dams are currently being constructed in Muscat Governorate, including protection dams in Wadi Adai (G2) and Wadi Al Khoud, Majlas Dam in Qurayat, and Al Ansab 2 and 3 dams in Wadi Al Ansab in Bausher.

Additionally, maintenance projects are ongoing for dams in Qurayat, Al Seeb, Al Amerat and Al Ansab.

These projects are part of a comprehensive strategy to preserve water resources and maintain ecological balance.

The dams in Oman are categorised into three types: groundwater recharge dams, surface storage dams and flood protection dams. Groundwater recharge dams help store water in underground aquifers, surface storage dams provide sustainable water resources for mountainous regions, and flood protection dams safeguard areas from flood risks and seawater intrusion.

Dams serve to reduce flood risks, protect infrastructure, and support water storage and groundwater recharge. These projects are essential for preserving natural resources and maintaining environmental balance.
