SALALAH: The Omani anemone fish (Amphiprion amanuensis), a rare and striking marine species, is a testament to the biodiversity flourishing in the seas of the Sultanate of Oman. Endemic to Oman’s shores along the Arabian Sea, this vibrant fish boasts a maroon body adorned with wide white stripes, captivating marine photographers and diving enthusiasts alike. Its natural habitat is confined to the area between Masirah Island in the north and the Wilayat of Mirbat in the south, making it a symbol of Oman’s exclusive marine wealth.
Eng Salem bin Ahmed al Ghassani, Director of the Fisheries Research Centre in Dhofar Governorate, highlighted the ecological significance of the Omani anemone fish.
“This species thrives in coral reef environments, forming a remarkable symbiotic relationship with sea anemones. These unique interactions underscore Oman’s pivotal role as a hub for marine biodiversity in the Arabian Peninsula,” he said.
The symbiotic bond between the anemone fish and sea anemones is one of nature's marvels. The anemone offers protection through its venomous tentacles, to which the fish has developed immunity, while the fish ensures the anemone's health by cleaning it and warding off predators. This mutualistic relationship illustrates the intricate balance of marine ecosystems.
Recognising the rarity and ecological importance of the Omani anemone fish, the Fisheries Research Centre in Dhofar has undertaken a survey programme to assess its natural stock and habitat conditions. This initiative aims to map the fish’s geographical distribution, determine its numbers and evaluate the surrounding coral reef environments. Using methods like marine field surveys and statistical analyses, the programme also seeks to register this species with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to protect its intellectual property rights.
Eng Al Ghassani emphasised, “The Omani anemone fish is more than just an endemic species - it is a symbol of Oman’s rich marine diversity. Protecting this species is vital for ensuring the health and sustainability of Oman’s marine ecosystems.”
The programme reinforces Oman’s commitment to marine conservation and underscores the country’s leadership in preserving biodiversity on regional and international stages. The efforts to protect the Omani anemone fish reaffirm Oman’s dedication to sustainable environmental stewardship, ensuring its seas flourish for generations to come. - ONA
