MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman has made a remarkable leap in the Global Quality Index issued by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (Unido), climbing 57 spots to rank 60th globally out of 155 countries. Within the Middle East, Oman now holds the 6th position, significantly improving from its previous 117th place.

This achievement reflects Oman’s commitment to enhancing its national quality systems. Dr Saleh bin Saeed Masan, Under-Secretary for Commerce and Industry at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) , credited this success to the ministry's focused initiatives, particularly the development of the national specifications and standards framework launched in 2022. These efforts included seven core initiatives such as the "Hazm" electronic platform, which streamlines conformity services, simplifies procedures, and aligns specifications with market needs.

Other initiatives include the Omani Conformity System, the establishment of the Omani Accreditation Center, and programs supporting innovation through specifications. These efforts are designed to remove barriers to trade, facilitate imports and exports, and improve the competitiveness of Omani products globally.

Masan emphasized that Oman’s advancements in quality systems reflect its alignment with Oman Vision 2040 and the goals of the Tenth Five-Year Plan. The ministry continues to invest in developing digital systems that incorporate artificial intelligence to streamline standardization processes, reduce errors, and save time and resources. Additionally, ongoing efforts include training Omani professionals in standardization and updating policies and regulations to meet international market demands.

Imad bin Khamis al Shukaili, Director General of Standards and Metrology at MoCIIP, noted that the strategic focus on enhancing metrological capabilities and activating private sector partnerships has been instrumental. He highlighted the role of Oman’s active participation in regional and global organizations, including the Gulf Standardization Organization, the International Organization for Standardization, and the International Electrotechnical Commission. Oman now chairs three of the Gulf Standardization Organization’s technical committees, further cementing its leadership in quality management.

Oman also participates in 31 technical committees and working groups under the International Standardization Organization, focusing on consumer policy, conformity assessment, and supporting developing countries.

Future plans include launching an Omani e-store for standard specifications, further digitalizing services, and signing agreements with international partners to align trade policies and mutual recognition of conformity certifications. These efforts aim to ensure that Oman continues its upward trajectory, enhancing its global competitiveness and fostering sustainable economic growth. — ONA
