Art therapy serves as a powerful psychotherapeutic approach that harnesses the transformative potential of creativity to process difficult emotions, feelings, and traumas. It offers a unique healing journey through artistic expression, providing an alternative path to traditional therapeutic methods. By encouraging individuals to engage in drawing and painting, art therapy enables them to uncover and articulate their inner thoughts in ways that words alone often cannot achieve. This approach not only fosters self-exploration but also helps reduce stress and improve overall quality of life.

In an inspiring initiative, Al-Murooj School recently showcased an "Art Therapy Exhibition," which placed a spotlight on the expressive works of students grappling with familial difficulties alongside those participating in integration programs. Organized by the school’s dedicated activities coordinators, the exhibition highlighted the profound role of creativity in nurturing self-expression and emotional well-being.


The exhibition aimed to cultivate a safe and collaborative environment where students could channel their emotions, share personal narratives, and find solace in artistic engagement. It primarily focused on two groups: those facing familial or psychological challenges and students with cognitive developmental needs. Teachers such as Mariam Al-Haddad, Ameera Al-Kaf, and Sultanah Al-Mahri played integral roles in providing students with paints, canvases, and cameras, fostering an atmosphere where they could freely express their thoughts and emotions. The outcome was a vibrant collection of artworks brimming with hope.

According to Amina Ba-Omar, an activities coordinator at the school, the emphasis on painting and photography allowed students to visually communicate their feelings in extraordinary ways. “Painting and photography,” she remarked, “are some of the most direct forms of self-expression, enabling our students to convey sentiments that words sometimes fail to capture.”


Research has consistently shown that art therapy serves as an important tool for enhancing social and emotional development in students. This approach facilitates the release of inner feelings while bolstering self-confidence and resilience. Mathila Al-Mahri, the school’s head, passionately supported the initiative, underscoring how it aligns with Al-Murooj’s mission to harness creativity for character development. "We firmly believe that art is a powerful medium for self-expression, enabling students to release negative energy and cultivate self-esteem,” Al-Mahri stated. Studies indicate that art therapy can significantly contribute to improved mental and emotional health, equipping students to navigate life’s challenges more effectively.

Bringing this exhibition to fruition was not without its challenges. The school took great care to address privacy and confidentiality, particularly for students managing personal issues. By displaying artworks without student names, the exhibition allowed participants to share their stories without the risk of exposure.


Recognizing the importance of collective support, Al-Mahri emphasized the need for volunteers with expertise in art and education to mentor students in future projects. Through this exhibition, Al-Murooj School has illuminated not only the artistic talents of its students but also the significant value of art therapy as an educational approach. This exhibition powerfully illustrated that art can be an invaluable resource in overcoming life’s myriad challenges.
