MUSCAT: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, in partnership with the National Employment Programme and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, has introduced the "Freelancer Registry" for Oman’s tour guides, aiming to boost quality and professionalism within the industry.

Launched by Azzan bin Qasim al Busaidy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for Tourism, the initiative was attended by officials from both the public and private sectors at the Ministry's headquarters.

This registry provides a structured framework for tour guides, ensuring legal support and regulating freelance work in tourism. It offers tour guides an environment conducive to growth, facilitating procedures and providing access to training opportunities that elevate service quality and align with Oman’s tourism ambitions.

Al Busaidy emphasised the pivotal role of tour guides, noting that the quality of a tourist’s experience often hinges on a guide’s ability to present Oman’s attractions with authenticity and engaging storytelling. He added that the Ministry requires a formal licence and training for tour guides to reinforce quality standards and ensure continual development in the sector.

As of September, Oman boasts 906 licensed Omani tour guides, a testament to the growing professionalism within the industry. The registry also aims to attract new entrants, fostering career opportunities in tourism and enhancing local employment in this vital field. — ONA
