MUSCAT: Omani women have been an integral part of the nation's identity since the dawn of the Renaissance, playing key roles in shaping society under the leadership of the late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos and continuing today under His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Sultan of Oman. Their contributions span various fields, from preserving cultural heritage to participating in the country's development, making them symbols of resilience and excellence.
For decades, Omani women have been the custodians of values and traditions, ensuring the transmission of cultural and social heritage across generations. They have upheld the nation's identity through their roles in family life, the preservation of traditional attire, culinary traditions, and active involvement in national celebrations. Today, their roles have evolved beyond these responsibilities to include contributions to the arts, culture, and other creative industries, helping shape a modern national identity.
Dr Saif bin Saeed, a professor at A’Sharqiyah University, emphasises that Omani women are not only protectors of heritage but also vital partners in modernising national identity to meet contemporary needs.
“Their involvement in sectors like education, culture and media is crucial for strengthening Omani identity in today's world,” he asserts.
Equality between men and women is a cornerstone of Omani citizenship, as demonstrated by equal access to education, employment and political participation. Omani women are full partners in the country’s social, economic, and political progress, contributing significantly to national development and stability.
Women have gained key rights, including the right to vote and run for political office, with many holding senior government positions, thus influencing political and economic decisions.
Dr Suad bint Saeed al Harrasiyah, a prominent advocate for women’s empowerment, notes, “Citizenship in Oman means active participation in nation-building. Today, Omani women are key partners in driving sustainable development and promoting civic values.”
Education has been a pivotal factor in empowering Omani women. From the onset of the modern Renaissance, the government placed immense value on women’s education, enabling them to attain prestigious positions and make substantial contributions across various sectors.
This access to education has opened doors to higher learning and professions like medicine, engineering, and politics, furthering women’s impact on national policy.
Dr Saif affirms, “Education is the foundation that has empowered Omani women to contribute to the nation's development. Today, educated Omani women symbolise progress and prosperity.”
Omani women have consistently received robust support from the leadership. Her Highness The Honourable Lady Assayida Ahd Abdullah Hamed al Busaidi, Spouse of the Sultan of Oman, expressed pride in Omani women’s achievements and continues to encourage further success.
She has remarked, “Since the dawn of the Renaissance, Omani women have proven their worth in all fields. They have been, and continue to be, key supporters of the nation’s progress. We stand by every effort to empower them and enhance their participation in public life.”
This commitment underscores the leadership’s dedication to ensuring women’s participation across all aspects of national life, with a clear focus on their role in sustainable development.
However, challenges persist, particularly in rural and remote areas, where traditional customs and perceptions may sometimes impede women's progress. Despite these obstacles, ongoing governmental and societal initiatives are actively working to overcome such barriers, striving to enhance women’s roles in all sectors.
The future holds great promise for Omani women. The next generation is eager to build upon the achievements of their predecessors, working to elevate the status of women in public life and foster greater gender equality.
Omani women, whether through preserving cultural heritage or shaping political and economic landscapes, remain an integral part of the national fabric. Their journey toward empowerment, supported by both government and society, has made them symbols of active citizenship and key partners in Oman’s future.
As Her Highness The Honourable Lady Assayida Ahd Abdullah Hamed al Busaidi, Spouse of the Sultan of Oman, reaffirmed, Omani women will continue to be essential contributors to the nation’s progress, and their ongoing empowerment will play a central role in realising Oman Vision 2040.
