Syria, Saudi, Bahrain and Jordan players impress

MUSCAT: Saudi’s Rayyan al Mukimer secured slot in the semis of men’s singles at Under-15 category as he defeated UAE's Mayed Tariq 21-7, 21-9 at the West Asia Junior Badminton Championship. The six-day event will conclude on Saturday at the indoor hall of the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.


The final ceremony will be held under auspices of Eng Ahmed bin Hassan al Dheeb, Deputy Chairman of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones, in presence of Dr Abdul Rahim bin Musallam al Daroushi, Chairman of Oman Racket Sports Committee (ORSC), and top officials.


Saudi Arabia, Syria and Jordan players managed to impress in the finals of singles event for U15 and U17 categories. Syrian Abd Rahman al Kaabani edged Mohammed al Qayasi from Iraq by 21-19 and 21-19 in a tight clash of U15 men's singles while Iraq's Osamah Salem beat UAE's Mayed al Mazroui 21-7, 21-1. Syrian Mohammed Khald al Rafae booked spot in the semifinal after beating Bahrain's Ali Kefah 21-14, 21-14.


In the Under-15 mixed doubles, Fatima Ehsan and Al Hanoof Mohammed from Bahrain edged Dana Ahmed and Shaikha Salem from the UAE by 21-19 and 21-9 to move into semifinal, while Areena Abdulsalam and Farah Haneer from Iraq won against Siba and Noor Jaber from Jordan by 21-13 and 21-8.


The singles matches of U15 and U17 categories will take place on Saturday.



In the teams level, Saudi Arabia emerged the under-15 champions. Syria team managed to earn the under-17 team title. The team competitions of the West Asia Junior Badminton Championship concluded recently while the singles event began on Thursday and will run until Saturday. The Syria team players managed to clinch the team’s U17 category title after defeating Saudi Arabia 3-2 in a thrilling final. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia team secured the U15 title with a close 3-2 victory over Syria in the final.


On the other side, Oman’s junior team squad comprised of Shihab al Hinai, Faisal al Hinai, Abdulaziz al Hinai, Ziyad al Hinai, Hamed al Buraidi, Mohammed al Maqrashi, Sultan al Azri, Ahmed al Azri and Meral al Hosni.



The tournament is being hosted by Oman and organised by the Oman Racket Sports Committee in collaboration with the Asia Badminton. The event features participation of 58 players representing eight West Asian countries including Jordan, UAE, Bahrain, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Syria and the hosts Sultanate of Oman. Competitions are being held in singles and doubles for both U15 and U17 as well as mixed doubles.
