MUSCAT: The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation (MoHERI) has launched a programme to support the establishment and operation of innovation centres and technology transfer under the auspices of Dr Rahma bint Ibrahim al Mahrouqiyah, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.
The programme includes organisational structures affiliated with higher education institutions and aims to support innovators and entrepreneurs in benefiting from scientific research and technological innovations, transforming them into successful projects.
It consists of innovation incubators and accelerators, laboratories and modelling centres, and technology transfer and localisation offices.
Dr Rahma confirmed during her speech at the ceremony that the Sultanate of Oman is experiencing a renewed renaissance in all fields, particularly in higher education and scientific research. She emphasised that interest in scientific research is crucial for progress, aligning with the vision of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik as outlined in Oman Vision 2040.
Innovation centres are essential for investing in knowledge and entrepreneurship, supporting the national economy by providing quality services to ensure the success of innovative projects and addressing challenges they may face during various growth stages. The programme aims to strengthen the national system of creativity and innovation, ultimately contributing to the achievement of Oman Vision 2040.
The programme was designed to enhance scientific capabilities, create an innovative environment for entrepreneurship, and improve Oman's ranking in global indicators such as the Global Innovation Index, the Global Competitiveness Index, and the Global Entrepreneurship Index.
Its goals include establishing innovation centres, empowering existing centres in higher education institutions, enhancing their readiness, and developing innovative solutions to national priority challenges.
Additionally, the programme seeks to build entrepreneurship and innovation skills, support the national economy through innovative startups, bridge the gap between academia and industry, and foster sustainable partnerships.
By facilitating communication between innovators and investors through networking, the programme aims to position Oman as a hub for innovation and technology on a regional and global scale, aligning with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, fostering a knowledge economy, and elevating the global ranking of universities in Oman.
