At 34, Roman Püntener, a marketing professional from Switzerland, has traversed the globe in search of the most awe-inspiring landscapes. With a passion for the outdoors and a love for self-planned travel adventures, his journey has taken him to some of the world’s most beautiful places. Yet, it is Oman that holds a special place in his heart.
Having visited Oman twice, in 2019 and 2022, Roman was captivated by the country’s stunning natural beauty, diverse landscapes, and warm hospitality. From the golden dunes of Sharqiya Sands to the rugged peaks of Jebel Shams, Oman offered a unique contrast to the alpine vistas he is accustomed to in Switzerland.
“I first learned about Oman through travel blogs and photos, and I was immediately drawn to the golden mountains and serene Wadis,” Roman recalls. “The landscape was unlike anything I’d ever seen, and with direct flights from Zurich, I knew I had to experience it for myself.”
During his visits, Roman explored a range of destinations across the country, including Muscat, Nizwa, Jebel Akhdar, and Jebel Shams.
The capital city, Muscat, left a lasting impression, particularly the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which he describes as “one of the most beautiful buildings I’ve seen in all my travels - so symmetrical and perfect.” His early morning visit to the nearly empty mosque allowed him to fully appreciate its grandeur and tranquility.
Nizwa, with its authentic charm and rich history, also stood out as a highlight of Roman’s travels. “Nizwa Fort is magical, especially at sunset,” he says. “The city hasn’t been overly commercialised, which adds to its appeal. It’s a place where you can still feel the essence of Oman.”
For Roman, the true beauty of Oman lies in its diverse landscapes. Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams, two of Oman’s most famous mountain ranges, offered contrasting experiences. “Jebel Akhdar is perfect for a luxurious getaway, with breathtaking views and world-class accommodations like Anantara Al Jebel Akhdar,” Roman explains. “On the other hand, Jebel Shams is more adventurous and rugged, with fewer tourists and some of the most incredible views I’ve ever seen.”
One of Roman’s favourite activities was hiking the panorama trail at Jebel Shams during sunset, a moment he describes as “unforgettable.” The experience reminded him of his travels to the American Southwest, with the dramatic landscapes evoking memories of the Grand Canyon.
Beyond the mountains, Roman also explored Sharqiyah Sands and Wadi Shab, two of Oman’s most iconic natural attractions. “Wahiba Sands is a peaceful, quiet place where you can truly connect with nature,” he says. “Wadi Shab, while more touristy, is incredibly unique - a perfect desert oasis.”
Roman’s advice to fellow travelers? Take your time. “There is so much to see in Oman, and it’s worth spending at least two weeks to fully immerse yourself in the experience,” he suggests. “And always aim to visit popular spots early in the morning or at sunset to enjoy them without the crowds.”
As Roman reflects on his journeys, he expresses a deep desire to return to Oman, this time with plans to explore Ras al Jinz and the southern region of Salalah. “Oman is perfect for nature lovers. It’s authentic, diverse, and incredibly beautiful. I can’t wait to go back.”
