

Muscat: The Nizwa Fort in Al Dakhliyah Governorate received 196,915 visitors in 2023, according to the annual report of the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
It may be noted that overall, all forts and castles across the governorates received 558,232 visitors last year.
Among others, Bait al Maqham Castle in Muscat received 135,011 visitors, followed by Gabreen Castle (68,704), Bahla Fort (44,078), Taqah Castle (5,224), Mirbat Castle (5.064) , Khasab Castle (15,227), Suhar Fort (10,318), Barka Castle (8,044), Al Hazem Castle (21,488), and Nakhal Fort (16,868).
Month-wise, these forts and castles were generally visited during the cooler months: 102,934 in November, 80,352 in February, 74,005 in January, 77,523 in December, and 53,504 in March.
Whereas, museums in the country received 716,130 visitors in 2023, which included 66,670 official delegates and 99,711 students.
Nizwa Fort was built between 1649 and 1679 AD, and building the fort took 12 years.
With a height of 34 m, it serves as a flat-roof platform erected on a base of crushed stones. It is equipped with cannon holes.
Bait Al Maqham is located in the wilayat of Bausher in Muscat, near the sand dunes.
It has been quietly gaining popularity as a tourist destination in recent times for its proximity to the capital.
