Muscat: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) developed a mathematical equation that aims to enhance the efficiency of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms through the university’s Information Systems Department.
It is an advanced step in addressing many of the shortcomings of current equations, as it measures quantitative and qualitative similarities in big data at the same time, which enhances the accuracy and effectiveness of data analysis and knowledge extraction processes.
Dr Jameel bin Darwish al Shaqsi, Head of the Information Systems Department and the project’s principal investigator, said: “Artificial intelligence relies heavily on mathematics to solve complex problems, and developing new mathematical equations can lead to more effective and efficient solutions, which enhances the university’s ability to provide innovative solutions to society and the industrial sector, which enables Sultan Qaboos University to be at the forefront of academic institutions that lead technological progress in the region and the world.” He stressed that Sultan Qaboos University can develop advanced academic programmes based on these equations, which attract talented students and researchers from all over the world and contribute to the development of distinguished scientific cadres.
“Universities that excel in developing artificial intelligence technologies often attract partnerships with major companies and institutions. These partnerships can provide research funding and training opportunities for students, in addition to providing job opportunities for graduates.” He stressed that developing new mathematical equations can contribute to developing practical applications in various fields such as medicine, agriculture and economics.
“These applications can enhance the university's position as a centre for innovation and technology,” he said.
Al Shaqsi explained that a series of experiments were conducted on various medical data, such as those related to genes and cancer, and some agricultural and commercial data.
Several studies were conducted on the results of the experiments and compared them with many leading equations and algorithms.
