SALALAH: Parts of Dhofar's seafront, particularly in the Wilayat of Salalah, are undergoing a transformative renaissance driven by innovative projects like the Al Baleed Beach Project.
Spearheaded by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism within the Al Baleed Archaeological Park, this initiative is set to become a premier recreational haven for citizens, residents, and tourists alike, especially during the bustling Khareef season when the governorate welcomes a surge of visitors from both Oman and abroad.
Central to this ambitious project is a 1200-meter walkway on a suspended bridge, lined with eight cafes and restaurants offering breathtaking sea views. This meticulously designed promenade not only provides a picturesque setting for leisurely strolls but also enhances the local dining landscape, establishing a vibrant hub for relaxation and social interaction.
Articulating the project’s strategic vision, Ali bin Salem al Kathiri, Director of the Land of Frankincense Sites at the Directorate General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar Governorate, said: "The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is dedicated to leveraging our rich heritage resources to empower the local community. Our collaboration with the Royal International Company aims to rejuvenate cultural heritage sites and cultivate a sustainable tourism sector."
This collaboration promises to significantly increase visitor numbers to this World Heritage-listed site, celebrating Oman's profound heritage and culture. The Al Baleed Beach Project stands as a beacon of strategic development, not only promoting tourism in Dhofar but also highlighting the historical significance of the Land of Frankincense.
Local investor Haitham bin Salem al Hadari emphasised the project's critical role in regional development: "The Al Baleed Beach Project is vital for the area's growth, enhancing both economic and social life. It offers an inviting environment for citizens, residents, and visitors to enjoy shopping, dining, and exploring all elements of the project along the bridge." Al Hadari described the project as an architectural marvel, featuring shops and restaurants suspended on a bridge with stunning sea views, providing visitors with a unique and unforgettable experience.
Initial visitor data for the Al Baleed Beach Project indicates its substantial potential to attract tourists, thereby benefiting the local community and reinforcing the area's reputation as a premier tourist destination. Future plans include further development, introducing new attractions to engage a wider audience and maximize the project's positive impact.
Dhofar's coastal cities, with their stunning waterfronts, play a crucial role in attracting tourists. Many people spend their vacations on beaches to enjoy the serene seaside atmosphere. Al Dahariz Beach in Salalah is one of the most popular tourist destinations, known for its silver sands, coconut trees, and amenities such as barbecue areas, restrooms, and cafes.
Al Dahariz Beach remains a key tourist site year-round. During the autumn tourism season, the Al Dahariz Beachfront Project was inaugurated, spanning over 3,500 square meters. The project features a variety of cafes and restaurants catering to beachgoers, as well as designated areas for activities and events. Its modern design and positive visitor feedback have marked it as a significant addition to Salalah's tourist attractions.
Another notable initiative is the "Osara" project in the Raysut area of Salalah. Managed by young Omanis, "Osara" offers a comprehensive range of cultural and entertainment activities, dining options, and relaxation spots for all age groups. Launched in 2022, the project aims to create an attractive tourist destination showcasing the talents of Omani youth. Built entirely from recycled wood, "Osara" emphasises environmental sustainability. The founders aspire to make "Osara" a year-round tourist hotspot, leveraging the creativity and innovation of young people.
Supported by Dhofar Municipality, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority, and the Port of Salalah, "Osara" encourages youth initiatives and provides opportunities for local businesses, including restaurants and cafes, to participate in its operations.
Together, these projects represent a significant leap forward in Dhofar's tourism landscape, blending historical heritage with modern recreational facilities to create unique and sustainable tourist destinations.
