SALALAH: The Traffic Safety Institute in Dhofar stands out as one of the premier institutions dedicated to traffic safety in Oman. It is instrumental in bolstering road safety in the Governorate. Staffed with a team of highly qualified trainers and experts, the institute offers top-tier training and qualification programmes catering to various segments of the population.

During a recent exhibition at the Salalah Free Zone, Khalifa al Musalhi from the Royal Oman Police shed light on the pivotal role of the Traffic Safety Institute in Dhofar. In an interview with Observer, Al Musalhi emphasised the pressing issue of traffic accidents in Oman and the comprehensive efforts made by authorities to mitigate these incidents and their associated risks.

The institute’s primary objectives are raising awareness about the importance of adhering to traffic rules; promoting a culture of road safety; reducing the risks associated with traffic accidents; training drivers of all types of vehicles to ensure safe driving practices; and contributing to the development of a community well-versed in traffic regulations.

In support of these goals, the Traffic Safety Institute provides a range of specialised training programmes. The Preventive Driving Programme, for example, is tailored for both light and heavy vehicle drivers, and focuses on teaching safe driving skills and accident avoidance techniques.

Likewise, the Bus Drivers Qualification Programme is designed specifically for bus drivers, and imparts safe driving skills and emergency handling techniques. Similarly, the Motorcycle Drivers Qualification Programme emphasises safe driving practices for two-wheels, and risk management on the roads.

For driving instructors, there’s a Qualification Programme that equips driving instructors with the necessary skills to teach safe and effective driving. Other specialised programme include the Traffic Engineering and Traffic Safety Skills Development Programmes, which cater to more specific needs within the realm of traffic safety.

Importantly, the institute leverages state-of-the-art educational technologies to enhance the training experience. Driving simulators provide a safe environment for trainees to experience various driving situations.

Educational videos effectively illustrate traffic rules and highlight the dangers of traffic accidents. Other interactive materials engage trainees and facilitate a deeper understanding of the information.
