MUSCAT: The Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Ali witnessed the birth of a goat with one eye under the supervision of clinic’s specialist doctor, Dr Riyad Mahmoud Hassan.

In a rarest of cases, a cesarean was performed to extract the newborn, said the doctor.

The newborn was suffering from a congenital deformity known scientifically as ‘cyclopia’, as well as some deformities in the bones of the jaw and skull. This condition occurs due to a genetic defect or the ingestion of some poisonous plants by the mother during pregnancy. The third week of pregnancy is when these plants contain the toxic substance cyclopamine, which leads to deformity.

It occurs when the two halves of the brain are not aligned normally, resulting in the formation of one central cavity with one eye, and the eyelashes and eyelids disappear. The head of the veterinary clinic, Saleh al Kasbi, said that these cases are among the rarest cases in the world.

He added that the veterinary clinic in Jaalan is one of the largest clinics in Oman serving two largest wilayats of Al Sharqiyah South , Jaalan Bani Bu Ali and Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan.

Some villages are more than 180 km away from the clinic centre. According to the latest animal census, Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan contains approximately 154,000 animals, and Jaalan Bani Bu Ali has more than 133,000 animals. It serves a large segment of livestock breeders across the two wilayats, and large numbers of animals have been treated.
