MUSCAT: The Environment Society of Oman (ESO) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) recently, highlighting its 2023 achievements and publishing its new Annual Report, available on its website www.eso.org.om. The report underscores the importance and impact of ESO's work, acknowledges the many entities that made it possible, and celebrates Oman’s incredible biodiversity.

This year’s AGM was a voting year, requiring members to elect new board members.

The voting resulted in a Board comprising the Honourable Dr Amer bin Nasser al Mataani as President, Rumaitha al Busaidy as Vice-President, Abdulaziz al Abdali as Treasurer, Nashwa al Rawahi as Secretary and Amira al Yaarubi as Director. Other members include Omar al Riyami, Dr Mohammed al Kalbani, Dr Ali Akaak, Esam al Shaibani, and Nasser al Maskari. Each of these distinguished board members holds strategic roles in multiple sectors, providing extensive perspectives on environmental conservation and sustainability.

Following the official board appointment by the Ministry of Social Development, the Board held its first official meeting to discuss the contents of the noble speech delivered by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik at the opening of the Oman Council in November 2023. His Majesty emphasised the national goal of achieving climate neutrality by mid-century through adopting environmentally friendly technologies, sustainable projects, and nature-based solutions, enhancing biodiversity, and preserving ecosystems.

The Honourable Dr Amer al Mataani, President of the Board of the Environment Society of Oman, said, "We are following the wise approach of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, may God protect him, and have the genuine ambition, vision, and commitment to implement the contents of his noble speech as a roadmap to achieving Oman Vision 2040. The national course towards carbon neutrality by 2050 is one of our most important goals, and we are committed to raising community awareness and preserving Oman's natural heritage for future generations. This is a concept deeply rooted in Oman and its Renaissance, and we aim to achieve it through our future projects and programmes."

This commitment aligns well with Oman’s success in raising its environmental index and setting ambitious environmental targets. ESO is dedicated to supporting the government’s vision to achieve these targets and emphasises the importance of cooperation with government and private entities, as well as civil society, to meet the environmental and climate goals aspired to by the Sultanate of Oman. This collective effort is essential to ensure a sustainable future for our coming generations.
