

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MoHERI) and UK-based QS Quacquarelli Symonds organised a significant roundtable discussion and seminar in Muscat, focusing on establishing Oman as an international student hub.
The event, held at the Maani Muscat Hotel & Suites, was conducted under the auspices of Dr Rahma bint Ibrahim al Mahrouqiyah, Chair of the Board of Oman Authority for Accreditation and Quality Assurance (OAAAQA) and Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation in Oman.
The seminar brought together prominent attendees, including senior officials from the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, university presidents, esteemed faculty members, and industry experts.
The primary agenda was to deliberate on Oman’s potential as an International Student Hub, emphasising its multicultural environment, peaceful society, and strategic location at the crossroads of Asia and Africa.
Key highlights from the seminar included data from QS research, showcasing successful international student destinations and drawing parallels with Oman’s unique attributes.
The roundtable discussions provided an in-depth analysis of Oman’s strengths and areas needing development to enhance its appeal to international students.
A networking lunch offered attendees an opportunity to further discuss and collaborate on these ideas.
Dr Ashwin Fernandes, Executive Director for Africa, Middle East, and South Asia, and Rami Awad, Regional Manager for Africa, Middle East, and South Asia, were among the notable presenters who shared their insights and expertise on the subject.
Following this enlightening session, QS will embark on creating a comprehensive white paper titled 'Oman as an International Student Hub,' to be published jointly with MoHERI in September 2024.
This document will encapsulate the study presented, discussions held, and actionable plans and objectives, aiming to pave the way for Oman’s emergence as a premier destination for international students.
