MUSCAT: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has announced progress in the construction of the Wadi Adai Dam in the Wilayat of Muttrah – a major infrastructure initiative that tackles two critical challenges: flood risks and dwindling groundwater reserves.
Spanning a length of 220 metres and height of 39 metres, the dam will boast a sizable storage capacity of 23 million cubic meters. Constructed with a core of compacted rock and soil, an innovative asphalt wall running along its center will prevent water seepage. Furthermore, a 120-meter concrete side spillway ensures controlled discharge of floodwaters during heavy rain events. Integrated gates will allow for meticulous water release and reservoir drainage, maximizing efficiency.
The dam serves as a guardian against the destructive potential of floods. By intercepting rainwater and floodwaters originating from the southern wadis before they reach the Al Qurum area, the project significantly reduces the risk of these devastating events. This translates to safeguarding lives, property, and fostering a sense of security residents downstream.
Beyond flood protection, the dam offers a sustainable solution for the wilayat’s groundwater woes. By capturing and storing precious water resources, the dam will contribute to replenishing surrounding wells. This improved groundwater availability will be a lifeline for the region, ensuring a reliable source for domestic and agricultural needs.
The Ministry has prioritized responsible development throughout the project. The dam's design incorporates earthquake safety measures, prioritizing the safety of the community. Additionally, the surrounding area will be aesthetically enhanced through tree plantation initiatives, creating a harmonious blend of functionality and environmental consciousness.
