Suhar: In a concerted effort to enhance community flexibility and preparedness, the National Awareness Campaign on Climate Hazards and Tsunami Waves kicked off in Al Batinah North from Sunday and will last until May 15.
The campaign is mainly organised by the Civil Aviation Authority, represented by the National Multi Hazard Early Warning System, the National Center for Emergency Management, the Ministry of Information, the Civil Defence and Ambulances Authority, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the offices of the Governors. It aims to build a robust understanding of climate-related risks and emergency response capabilities.
Shaikh Mohammed bin Sulaiman al Kindi, Governor of Al Batinah North, emphasised the recent challenges faced by Oman, especially Al Batinah North, due to the recent weather conditions and exceptional climate events. These events resulted in significant human losses, extensive damage to infrastructure such as roads, lighting poles, and essential services.
Shaikh Al Kindi highlighted the necessity of the campaign in light of Oman's vulnerability to tropical hurricanes and tsunami waves due to its geographical location overlooking the Arabian Sea.
He stressed the importance of raising awareness and fostering a culture of preparedness within the community to effectively respond to such emergencies, to reduce human and material losses.
An essential aspect of the campaign was showcasing strategies to reduce the impact of emergencies and promote safety protocols during crisis situations.
Key stakeholders and experts such as Nasser al Ismaili from the Civil Aviation Authority were instrumental in familiarising participants with operational procedures. Through comprehensive presentations and discussions, attendees gained insights into effective emergency response mechanisms and safety measures critical for protecting lives and property.
By fostering a culture of awareness, preparedness, and collaboration, the campaign emphasises the collective commitment towards building a resilient society capable of effectively navigating and reducing the risks and the challenges appearing due to natural disasters.
