BANJUL: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs took part in tasks of the 15th Session of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) Summit Conference held in, Banjul, the Republic of the Gambia on May 4 and 5, 2024. The summit took the slogan “Enhancing unity and solidarity through dialogue for sustainable development”.

Oman’s delegation was headed by Dr Mohammed bin Said al Maamari, Minister of Awqaf and Religious Affairs.

The minister conveyed the greetings of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to the conferees and his sincere wishes for the success of the summit.

Al Maamari pointed that the summit was held at a delicate moment and conditions that require member states to unite and enhance the quest for prosperity and sustainability that serve their respective peoples and the world at large.

He added that the Islamic world today needs to double efforts and devise effective initiatives and policies to address the common challenges.

In his speech, he laid emphasis on the importance of member states’ intensifying joint action to combat extremism, terrorism, discrimination, hatred and Islamophobia. He also underlined the importance of promoting values of tolerance and coexistence in the world.

Al Maamari stressed that the tensions and military escalation that jeopardise the safety and stability of the region is a natural outcome of the brutal Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip.

The minister deplored the “international community failure to stop this senseless war and deter Israel from its persistent violations of international law and some countries’ use of double standards.” In this context, Al Maamari expressed regret for the United Nations “Security Council’s failure to adopt resolutions on recognising the State of Palestine, despite global consensus on Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and right to establish their independent state.” Al Maamari said that the Sultanate of Oman always emphasises its steadfast position at international and regional meetings in supporting the Palestinian cause.

The two-day conference discussed means of combating hate speech and Islamophobia, as well as economic, humanitarian, social and cultural challenges. It called for the promotion of dialogue among nations belonging to different civilisations in the world. — ONA
