SAS 48 Hackathon strives to reduce emissions

Muscat: The 6th edition of SAS 48 Hackathon kicked off in Muscat last week under the slogan “Green Tech”. The event was organised by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology.


The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of Dr Ali bin Amer al Shaithani, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for Communications and Information Technology.


Dr Al Shaithani speaking to the Observer that the hackathon is organised every six months, and so far the topic of the next hackathon has not been announced.


He pointed out that there are three winners, who are being entered into a qualification programme to turn their ideas into reality.


He pointed out that many participants in previous hackathons have now become successful entrepreneurs like Otaxi.


He explained that not all ideas turn into reality, but they are the initial spark for the idea to complete its path to becoming a well-known company.


Al Shaithani added that zero carbon neutrality is the primary concern in the current period and to achieve success in the year 2050, we motivate youths to think in this direction. He stressed that the hackathon inspires young people to come up with ideas to achieve zero carbon neutrality.


Amira al Harrasi, Director of the SAS 48 Hackathon Project, indicated that the idea of the hackathon is to use technology to solve various environmental problems.


Abdullah bin Ali al Busaidy, an expert of the Zero Carbon Neutrality Team at the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology ..pointed out green technology topics contribute to reducing carbon emissions.


The SAS 48 Hackathon provides ideal opportunities for the participants to develop realistic solutions to overcome the challenges posed by their projects. The jury will select the top three winners who come up with the most innovative ideas from among 1,163 participants who contested the 6th edition of the SAS 48 Hackathon.
