Muscat: The Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has formed a fact-finding team to look into the death of people, including several school children, in the North al Sharqiyah Governorate as the Sultanate was affected by the exceptional weather conditions.

The team will submit its report within a period not exceeding one month from the date of its formation.

The formation of this team comes based on a number of the committee’s terms of reference as per the Royal Decree No 57/2022, which is to follow up on the protection of human rights and freedoms in the Sultanate of Oman as per the Basic Law of the State, the applicable laws, and the international charters and agreements to which the Sultanate of Oman has acceded.

The OHRC's jurisdiction includes monitoring violations and abuses related to human rights, assisting in settling and resolving them, receiving complaints in the field of human rights, studying and recommending them to the competent authorities, providing advice to the relevant authorities in the state on matters related to human rights and freedoms, and contributing to the preparation of reports that address these topics.

OHRC issued a statement in which it called on the concerned authorities to take all necessary measures to ensure that such painful incidents are not repeated within the framework of what is required by the applicable laws and agreements to which the Sultanate of Oman has acceded.

It also called on everyone to take the utmost caution and take into account the best interest of children to preserve the right to life, which is the foundation on which all human rights are based.
