Al Khuwair Square to be launched on 54th National Day

Muscat: Muscat Municipality unveiled details of its Al Khuwair Square project in the Ministries District, which will also feature Oman's tallest flagpole, measuring in 126 meters in height. The project will be launched as part of the 54th National Day celebrations.


The details were unveiled at the presence conference attended by Sayyid Saud bin Hilal al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat; Ahmed bin Mohammed al Humaidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality, and Harsha Shetty, CEO of Jindal Shadeed Iron and Steel, a subsidiary of Jindal Group in Oman, which financed this monumental project.

The flagpole will be the highest man-made facility in the history of the Sultanate of Oman, equivalent to a building with 40 floors.


It will be made of iron and also require 135 tonnes of steel.


The outer diameter of the flagpole at the base is 2,800 mm, while the diameter at its highest point is 900 mm.


The dimensions of the Omani flag are 18 meters in length and 31.5 meters in width.


The flagpole will be provided with a warning lighting system for aircraft.

The project extends over an area of ​​more than 18,000 square meters and will offer a variety of recreational features, such as grass turf, palm trees, paths designated for walking and bicycles, an outdoor exhibition area, and a skateboarding area.


The project was also equipped with public facilities such as toilets and 107 parking lots.


Al Busaidi appreciated the efforts made by the public and private sectors to implement this initiative and said this landmark will be a must-visit sport for those within and outside the Sultanate.


Al Humaidi said, "The Al Khuwair Square project was the result of cooperation between the Governorate of Muscat and the Jindal Shadid Iron and Steel Company, which is considered one of the largest iron producers in the region and the world.”


When asked about the congestion that the project will cause in Muscat, he replied that Muscat is considered one of the least crowded cities and that the project’s location is well thought out so as not to cause any congestion.


Harssha Shetty, CEO of Jindal Shadeed Iron and Steel stated: “We are proud to partner with the Muscat Governorate to implement this pioneering project and build the highest flagpole in the Sultanate of Oman to inspire future generations to always strive towards more progress and success.”
