Event held to highlight cybersecurity in communications

MUSCAT: The National Telecommunications Security Exercise event was held yesterday in Muscat. The event was a significant gathering focusing on cybersecurity within the field of communications. Key players in the telecommunications sector, such as Omantel, Ooredoo and Vodafone Oman, all came together to participate.


The event was inaugurated by Eng Omar bin Hamdan al Ismaili, the CEO of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority. In his address, he emphasised the importance of cooperation among all stakeholders to assess the sector's capabilities in addressing vulnerabilities, evaluating infrastructure readiness, and ensuring compliance with regulations.

Al Ismaili highlighted that the exercise represented an advanced experience, providing an opportunity to identify and rectify gaps. He noted the rapid evolution and continuous change in the communications and information technology sector, underscoring the necessity for collaborative efforts from both government institutions and private sector entities in delivering services effectively.


Dr Ahmed bin Hammad al Kalbani, Dean of the Advanced Cyber Security Academy, explained that the exercise revolved around a simulated scenario encompassing various elements, including aspects of electronic security breaches, regulatory compliance, and managing public perceptions linked to the scenarios.


Eng Maqbool bin Salem al Wahaibi, CEO of Oman Data Park, emphasised that the exercise was a vital component of the Oman Cybersecurity Conference. He stressed that such simulations were crucial in preparing for potential cybersecurity threats, highlighting the need for coordinated efforts among relevant authorities to achieve optimal outcomes.


As part of the overarching initiative, the fourth session of the “Oman Cybersecurity Conference” is scheduled to commence under the theme “The Cybersecurity Revolution in the Communications Sector.” The event will be conducted in collaboration with the Cyber Defense Center, the Advanced Cybersecurity Academy, and Oman Data Park, underscoring the collective dedication to enhancing cybersecurity practices within the telecommunications industry.
