Muslims began to flock to markets to fulfill Zakat al Fitr; the act of giving and solidarity in Islam by purchasing necessities for distribution. Some of them opted to transfer RO 1.5 to Zakat committees.
Dr Hamad bin Abdullah al Hashmi, the head of the Zakat committee in Al Kamil and Wal Wafi, said, "Zakat al Fitr or the Zakat of Bodies is considered one of the greatest charitable acts in Ramadhan. It is a specific quantity of food estimated by a Sa' (a traditional measure) that the head of the household should give on behalf of each member of their family, including children, to purify them from idle talk and obscenities during fasting. It is given to the poor and needy. One Sa' is equivalent to 2.058 kg of rice, and the weight varies depending on the type of food such as dates, raisins, and wheat. It also includes lentils or other foodstuff."
It is obligatory for all Muslims. "It is a compulsory Sunnah for the financially capable, and it is not exempted except for those who are incapable, " according to Al Hashmi. The Zakat committee of Al Kamil and al Wafi has been collecting Zakat since the 15th of Ramadhan in cash. From 27th, they will distribute 10 kg of rice and 10 kg of flour per family for 750 registered families in the wilayat of Al Kamil and Al Wafi.
"Zakat committees collect Zakat al Fitr from the community. It ensures the Zakat are responsibly distributed among people who are deserved. Al Hashmi said, "The committee will distribute Zakat on the 27th of Ramadan to those in need. Zakat al Fitr is due at the end of Shawwal and cannot be paid before Ramadhan or after the Eid prayer. Otherwise, it will be considered regular charity and not Zakat."
Zakat al Fitr holds numerous benefits and significance in Islam. Al Hashmi expressed its benefits, stating, "Zakat al Fitr represents worship to Allah and an expression of gratitude for His abundant blessings. It serves as a means to purify souls and expiate sins accumulated during the month of Ramadhan. Zakat al Fitr also promotes solidarity, strengthens social bonds between the rich and the poor, and helps Muslims to rid themselves of idle talk, obscenities, and selfishness. Its economic and social impact include economic development, money circulation, and fostering compassion among Muslims."
Performing Zakat al Fitr is among the simple acts that yield immense rewards from Allah. Its essence lies in achieving justice and balance in society, reflecting the spirit of giving, solidarity, and love among all Muslims.
