Mosques hold immense significance for Muslims worldwide. Serving as places of worship, they facilitate the five daily prayers and the Friday congregational prayer, fostering community unity.

These sites symbolize Islamic identity and serve as hubs for education, offering classes on theology and Quranic studies. They also function as social centers, hosting events like weddings and community dinners, promoting cohesion among Muslims. Many mosques carry historical importance, connecting present-day Muslims to their rich heritage.

In Al-Ghafat, a village located within the Wilayat of Bahla in Al Dhakilyah, there exists an outstanding historical and spiritual site - Al-Masjid Al-Sharqi, also known as the Al-Hara Mosque. It is distinguished by its beautiful architecture, featuring a small mihrab, columns, a modest minaret, and an external platform.

Al-Ghafat, positioned a mere 21 kilometers northwest of the center of Bahla, is accessible via the Bahla-Ibri road that connects Al Dhakiliayah to Al Dhahirah Governorate.

Al-Ghafat, with its historical forts, castles, and Al-Kur Mountain, offers a rich place of cultural and natural attractions. Al-Masjid Al-Sharqi, known for its exquisite design, features a small but beautifully crafted Mihrab, cylindrical columns, and a modest minaret.

These elements are complemented by an external platform (Sarh), which not only enhances the mosque's aesthetic appeal but also serves as a space for gatherings on most occasions. In the holy month of Ramadan, people gather on the external platform in the mosque to have their Iftar together, experiencing the scent of these blessed days in communal unity.

Below the mosque, a traditional Omani falaj (water canal) runs, embodying the ingenuity of ancient water management systems and providing a backdrop for the mosque's ablution and bathing facilities. In 2016, Al-Masjid Al-Sharqi underwent significant restoration, spearheaded by Omanis in Bahla and supported by volunteers and donors passionate about heritage conservation. This initiative was not merely a preservation effort; it was a reaffirmation of the community's dedication to its historical and spiritual value.

Ahmed Al-Hanai, an Omani photographer from Bahla, has always been fascinated with the treasures found in his hometown and one of his latest photo projects revolved around this reverred site.

"I've always loved the idea of showcasing Oman and its heritage in the best possible way, surrounded by its beautiful heritage sites. I always try my best to photograph these heritage sites and present them in the most beautiful way,” he shared.

On this latest project, Ahmed shared that he wanted to capture the spirit of Ramadhan in his hometown and bedecked with lights, it was a real beauty that captures the importance of the mosque to the people who lived in their area.

"While small, it has been an important meeting place for the villagers where we do our prayers. To showcase that importance is to make people understand the historical importance of these places," Ahmed said.

Ahmed shared that it was a rough start getting into photography and just like many others, he started as well with his phone. Being his passion, he has learned some techniques over the years and he's dedicated to capturing more beautiful heritage stories through his photography in the years to come.
