Flood protection dams in Seeb, Amerat completed

Muscat: The basic construction work at the flood protection dams in Al Jifnain in the Wilayat of Seeb and Al Al Jufainah in the Wilayat of Al Amerat in Muscat Governorate with a combined capacity of 26.8 million cubic metres, has been completed, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources announced on Wednesday.


Engineer Nasser bin Mohammed al Battashi, Director-General of the Directorate- General of Water Resources Assessment at the Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources, said that the basic construction work is now complete in Al Jufainah Dam in the Wilayat of Al Amerat. Work is underway in the diversion channel at the top of the reservoir with a length of 8 kilometres and a width of 40 metres. The dam is 2.66 kilometres long and has a storage capacity of up to 15.7 million cubic metres of water.

The Al Jufainah Dam project in the Wilayatof Seeb includes the construction of a pile dam with a height of 18.5 metres and a length of 6,500 metres. The dam has two spillways, two concrete towers, a concrete divider and several openings for discharging retained water, the official added.


Both dams were equipped with monitoring devices for measuring groundwater and leakages as well as a device to measure the level of water and silt in the lake. Al Jafainah Dam is the last barrier to flood waters before reaching the sea and passing through the commercial and residential areas in Al Khoudh, Al Hail and Al Mawalih, the official concluded. — ONA
