Suhar: The projects presented by students of University for Technical and Applied Sciences, Sohar, have won several accolades at the recently held International Conference on Environmental Sciences and Engineering for Sustainable Development.

One of the research projects that garnered acclaim is titled "Design and Implementation of High-Efficiency Three-Phase Inverter for the Speed Control of Electric Vehicles and Regenerative Braking Analysis." This project, led by Israa al Badi, Dana al Issai, Asia al Khanbashi, Al Baraa al Rasbi and Salima al Hinai under the supervision of Dr Magdy Saoudi Abdelfatah Saoudi, recently received the Best Poster Award (Second Place) of UTAS. The project aims to enhance energy efficiency in electric vehicles through innovative technology.

Another distinguished project, recognised with the Best Paper Award (Second Place), is led by Dr Mohammed Mihoub. The paper titled "Design and Experimentation of Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) for Habitat Monitoring" delves into the development and experimental validation of an ROV tailored for monitoring underwater habitats.

The ROV is equipped with Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), depth sensors and a Pixy camera, showcasing advanced technology for underwater exploration. The project’s results demonstrated the effectiveness of the AI controller in stabilising the ROV's depth, contributing significantly to underwater robotics advancements for sustainable habitat monitoring and conservation efforts.

Fatima Rashid al Aliani, supervised by Iman al Futaisi, led a project titled "A Study to Evaluate the Desulphurization of Omani Petroleum Fractions using Solvent Extraction." “This project focuses on using solvent extraction technology to purify Omani petroleum products, reducing sulfur content to improve air quality and comply with environmental regulations. This initiative aims to enhance the economic feasibility and competitiveness of petroleum products while addressing environmental pollution and health concerns,” she said. It represents a significant step towards sustainable practices in the oil industry, emphasising clean energy production and environmental compliance.

Dr Wasil Hashim Mohammed, Head of Engineering, said that “these researches will be published in an international journal. These researches initiatives align with UTAS Sohar's strategic vision of sustainability and excellence in scientific research and support the Oman vision priorities of achieving zero carbon neutrality. The recognition through prestigious awards reflects the university's commitment to fostering innovative solutions that address societal challenges and promote a greener, more sustainable future across land and sea.
