Nizwa: Children with lanterns and flashlights lit up Nizwa to mark the Al Aqabah Night in Nizwa on Tuesday. It marked the midpoint of Ramadhan, serving as a symbolic bridge between the fasting period and the joyous celebration of Eid al Fitr. Families cherish this occasion as it signifies a milestone in their children's fasting journey, with the first half of Ramadhan being dedicated to fasting.

Al Aqabah Night is part of Qaranqasho when children roam around the neighbourhood dressed up in colourful traditional attire and carrying small bags or baskets, going from door to door in their neighbourhoods. This celebration started as a way to reward children for successfully fasting for the first half of the month, and to encourage them to continue through the second half. It continues to be a beloved tradition throughout the Gulf countries.

As a part of the festivities, children are given sweets and candy, and treated to face painting, balloon art, cartoon characters, games and other fun activities. On this day, mothers also make rice dishes with meat, fish, or chicken, as well as harees and sweets, and distribute them to the poor. It's a night that brings joy and happiness to children's spirits. They roam around the streets, and villages raising their voices in praise and gratitude for the blessings they have received.

The Nizwa Charity team organised a celebration for this occasion at Nizwa Castle. Around 100 children of various ages participated enthusiastically in the celebration. Sweets were distributed to them, and afterward, the children walked through the neighbourhood, chanting praises and gratitude to God.

Loay al Subhi, a participant in the Al Aqabah Night, “This is the first time I have participated in Al Aqabah. I loved the atmosphere very much. I am now happy because I fasted this month. I will complete the rest of my fasting. I am glad that someone honours our strength and effort in fasting. I will participate every year.” The event also featured competitions and recitations of prayers.
