Consumer goods prices in Oman remain stable

MUSCAT: The prices of consumer goods in the Sultanate of Oman stabilised during February 2024 compared to the same month in 2023, according to consumer price index data issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) .


The data indicated a decrease in the prices of major groups such as the transportation group by 2.6 per cent, the restaurants and hotels group by 0.1 per cent, the clothing and footwear group by 0.2 per cent, communications by 0.3 per cent, and education by 0.4 per cent. In contrast, there is an increase in the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages by 1.1 per cent, and miscellaneous goods and services by 3.1 per cent, culture and entertainment at 0.6 per cent and tobacco at 2.4 per cent. The prices of the remaining groups remained stable.


In the food and non-alcoholic beverages group, the prices of fruits increased by 3.1 per cent, milk, cheese, and eggs by 4.2 per cent, sugar, jam, honey, and sweets by 2.8 per cent, oils and fats by 2 per cent, bread and cereals by 0.9 per cent, foodstuffs by 1.1 per cent, vegetables by 5.2 per cent, and meat by 1.7 per cent. Fish prices fell by 9.9 per cent.


The Muscat Governorate recorded the lowest percentage of decrease in inflation at the end of February 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year, as the index decreased by 0.3 per cent. Meanwhile there was a decrease of 0.2 per cent in the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, compared to an increase of 0.9 per cent in the North Al Sharqiyah Governorate.


The rate increased by 0.5 per cent in the Al Wusta Governorate, by 0.4 per cent in both the Dhofar and Al Buraimi Governorates, by 0.3 per cent in both the Al Dhahirah Governorate and the Musandam Governorate, by 0.2 per cent in each of the South Al Batinah and North Al Batinah Governorates, and by 0.1 per cent in the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate. — ONA
