Paris: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has renewed the UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Conservation for the next six years. The step was endorsed due to the positive outcome of the Award’s external evaluation process.

This was unveiled during the participation of Oman (through its permanent delegation to the UNESCO) in the UNESCO Executive Council’s 219th session, currently being held in Paris and will continue until March 27.

The external evaluation report showed that the Award was consistent with the tasks and competencies of the UNESCO, after relevant documents were reviewed and the outcome of related interviews and surveys was studied.

The Award corresponds to the programmes and priorities of the Organization's science sector, as well as the objectives of the UNESCO Programme on “Man and the Biosphere”. The Award felicitates individuals and parties that make outstanding achievements or conduct remarkable activities in the field of environmental conservation.

The report affirms that the Award is compatible with the United Nations 2030 sustainable development goals and objectives.

The Award also is in line with international treaties related to climate change and environmental protection, notably the Paris Agreement.
