Ramadhan, a month of spiritual reflection and purification, is also a time for shopping which is dictated by customs passed down through generations.

Fatima al Maqbalia, a housewife, values the traditional aspects of Ramadhan shopping. "For me, Ramadhan is about upholding family traditions and cultural practices," she said. For Fatima, the Iftar meal is wholesome only when it has original flavour. "I prioritise the quality of the things I offer in family gatherings and strive to instill these values in my children. Money comes and goes but keeping these values and traditions which reflect the generosity will stay for long." Ahmed al Khatri, a tech enthusiast, embraces online shopping as a convenient alternative during Ramadhan. "With heavy work schedules and family commitments, online shopping offers efficiency and convenience," he said. Ahmed highlights the ease of e-shopping through a wide range of products, comparing prices, and arranging for door delivery. It allows him to balance his responsibilities while preparing for Ramadhan gatherings. “Nowadays, you can easily shop lying down on the bed. No need to ride a car or negotiate price due to shopping apps and home delivery.”

For Ali al Saidi, Ramadhan shopping means simplicity and sustainability. "I believe in mindful consumption and reducing waste," he said. He prefers eco-friendly alternatives such as purchasing locally sourced produce, reusing items from previous years, and limiting unnecessary purchases. He highlighted that he still keeps the special dishes and Ramadhan decorations at home for future use. "Ramadan teaches us to appreciate what we have and prioritise meaningful experiences over material possessions," he says.”No need to show others what we have and how we look. What is more important is to show simplicity and save your money.”

Hana al Kumeya, highlights the importance of giving back while shopping during Ramadhan. "Charity is an integral part of the holy, and shopping presents an opportunity to support communities," she said.

Al Kumeya actively seeks out ethical brands and participates in initiatives that donate a portion of sales to charitable causes. To be a socially conscious member is a need nowadays, especially with the current situation in Gaza,” she said. "By aligning our shopping habits with our values, we can make a positive impact on society," Ramadhan shopping includes a diverse range of practices and perspectives, reflecting individual values, lifestyles, and priorities. Whether rooted in tradition, convenience, sustainability, or social responsibility, each approach contributes to the rich tapestry of Ramadhan culture.
