ABIDJAN: The Council of Oman took part in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation 18th Session of the PUIC, being held in Abidjan in the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire on March 2 to 5.


On the sidelines of the conference, Khalid bin Hilal al Maawali, Chairman of Majlis Ash’shura and head of the participating delegation, delivered a speech in which he stressed that climate change is one of the most important global issues that receives great attention and serious follow-up by many countries and organisations due to its importance and harm to humanity.


Al Maawali added that the Sultanate of Oman pays great attention to climate change and follows up on its developments. Climate change is an important issue that is being monitored by His Majesty the Sultan. The Sultanate of Oman has taken important steps to reduce climate change most importantly: the national strategy realise zero-neutrality by 2050, adopting an environmental policy for the energy sector, establishing the Oman Sustainability Centre, shifting to renewable energy, enhancing interest in sustainable cities and the green economy, encouraging innovative sources of energy and the efforts to reduce emissions in the industrial sector.


Al Maawali called for taking effective practical and immediate steps to enhance efforts, address the climate change phenomenon, cut traditional energy emissions and adhere to the necessary steps taken in this aspect.


The chairman of Majlis Ash’shura pointed out that wars, aggressions and the use of prohibited weapons are among the causes of climate change. He added that the people in Gaza and Palestine in general are suffering in front of the world and in full view of everyone amid detestable and unjustified silence.


The participating delegation is comprised of: Mohammad bin Salim al Harthy, member of the State Council, Ahmed bin Munshar Ba lahaf, member of Majlis Ash’shura, Hussain bin Mohammad al Lawati, member of Majlis Ash’shura, Salim bin Hamad al Mahrouqi, member of Majlis Ash’shura, Said bin Mohammed al Saadi, member of Majlis Ash’shura and Sulaiman bin Amer al Rajhi, member of Majlis Ash’shura.
