Omani student wins top prize for drone-based emergency response device

MUSCAT: Omani student Haitham al Omairi from Middle East College Oman secured the 1st Prize in the Undergraduate Project Competition at the 4th IEEE Oman Student and Young Professional (SYP) Congress 2024. Hosted by Sultan Qaboos University Student Branch on February 27, 2024, the event featured participants from diverse universities and colleges, each represented by their official IEEE Student Branches.


Al Omairi's winning project, titled "GPS-Enabled Smart Medical Drone for Emergency Response," addresses a critical need for efficient delivery of medical aid during natural disasters or emergencies. The project aims to overcome challenges associated with accessing medical resources in disaster-stricken areas, where infrastructure is damaged, transportation disrupted, and medical facilities overwhelmed.


The integration of cutting-edge technology, including GPS navigation and drone capabilities, allows for swift and secure delivery of medical supplies to remote and inaccessible regions. Al Omairi emphasized that incorporating medical drones into Oman's healthcare system could yield economic benefits, such as enhanced healthcare access, cost savings, job creation, and promotion of innovation.


While the concept of using drones for medical deliveries is not entirely new, Al Omairi's project stands out for its advanced features. The proposed drone utilizes a GPS system for navigation within designated geographical areas, ensuring precise delivery to those in need. The drone is equipped with a secure medicine locker, accessible through unique codes, providing a protected transit mechanism for critical medical elements.


Moreover, the project's incorporation of cameras, microphones, and various sensors, including Temperature Sensor, Pulse Oximeter Sensor, and Heart Rate Sensor, enables real-time communication between medical professionals and individuals in need. This feature allows for remote consultancy and assessment of patients' conditions, facilitating informed decisions and timely medical advice.


Al Omairi envisions that the project could revolutionize the delivery of medical components during disasters, significantly reducing response times and saving lives by reaching remote and challenging locations. The use of drones also minimizes the risks associated with traditional transportation methods, particularly during disaster situations.


The success of Al Omairi's project was celebrated at the closing ceremony of the SYP Congress 2024. The congress, which featured various competitions, workshops, and networking opportunities, underscored the commitment of the IEEE Oman section to enriching the student experience and fostering innovation in the fields of engineering and technology.
