The International Museum Construction Congress (IMCC) is set to make history as it takes place in Oman for the first time, marking a significant milestone for the global museum industry. Already on its 8th year, IMCC is designed for international museum leaders, architects, project managers, project directors, museum leadership, facilities, and security administrators involved in new construction, renovation, or expansion of museums.

Brian Mandrier, the managing director of IMCC, sheds light on the event's significance, objectives, and potential impact on the industry in an interview with Observer.

“The decision to host the Congress in Oman was carefully considered, with the aim of leveraging the country's rich cultural heritage and strategic location to create a unique platform for industry professionals to converge and exchange ideas,” he said. Mandrier emphasises the importance of this milestone, highlighting the opportunities it presents for fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing among museum stakeholders from around the world.

With a focus on advancing the development of the museum industry, the Congress happening on February 25-27, will address a wide range of themes and topics relevant to the sector. From innovative construction techniques to sustainable design practices, more than 120 attendees from more than 20 countries can expect to gain valuable insights from leading experts and practitioners in the field. Guests and attendees will be toured to Oman’s landmarks including the Oman National Museum, Oman Across the Ages Museum and the Royal Opera House.

Marta Oliveira, IMCC Oman Chairperson delivered the opening remarks with Dr Fatma Mohammed al Balushi, Director General of Museum Affairs at the Oman National Museum welcoming the guests and attendees. Meanwhile, Eng Al Yaqdhan bin Abdullah al Harthi, Director General of Oman Across Ages Museum, delivered the keynote session. Notable guests and speakers are slated to share their expertise, offering attendees a diverse and enriching learning experience.

Marta Oliveira, IMCC Oman Chairperson, enthusiastically highlighted the unparalleled opportunity awaiting attendees to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Oman's cultural and historical treasures. “Delving into the vibrant mosaic of the nation's heritage, participants will have the privilege of exploring an array of remarkable museums and cultural landmarks, including the prestigious Unesco World Heritage Sites that grace the Omani landscape,” she said.

Beyond the confines of traditional museum spaces, Oman, Marta added, beckons with a dazzling array of natural wonders that captivate the senses and ignite the imagination. “From the intricate aflaj water management systems that showcase the ingenuity of ancient civilisations to the fragrant frankincense trees that have symbolised prosperity and trade for centuries, every corner of this enchanting land is steeped in history and significance.”

Moreover, Oman's legacy as a hub of maritime exploration and intellectual pursuit is woven into the fabric of its identity, with seafaring scholars leaving an indelible mark on the country's cultural heritage. As attendees embark on this unforgettable journey through Oman's past and present, they will uncover a treasure trove of experiences that will deepen their appreciation for the intricate tapestry of history, culture, and innovation that defines this extraordinary nation.

Despite the challenges of organising an event in a new location, Mandrier remains optimistic about the Congress's potential to catalyse positive change within the industry. By providing a platform for networking and collaboration, the event aims to facilitate meaningful connections among participants and inspire new ideas and initiatives that will shape the future of museum construction.

Looking ahead, Mandrier envisions a bright future for the International Museum Construction Congress, with aspirations to expand its reach and impact in the years to come. Whether returning to Oman or exploring new locations, the Congress is poised to continue its mission of driving innovation and excellence in museum construction on a global scale.
