BAKU: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Shura Council discussed the topic of “Enhancing regional cooperation for sustainable development in Asia” during the 14th general assembly of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly.

The general assembly is held during the period from February 20-24 in Azerbaijan’s capital city Baku.

Khalid Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of the Shura Council, Head of Oman’s delegation said that the meeting comes within the framework of boosting regional cooperation in a bid to achieve sustainable development in Asia.

Al Maawali highlighted that sustainable development is a cornerstone of Oman’s national agenda, aligning with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Plan 2030. The Sultanate of Oman ranked first in the Gulf and fourth in the Arab world for achieving sustainable development goals, as per the 2022 Sustainable Development Report by the United Nations.

Al Maawali drew attention to the challenges faced by a part of Asia under Israeli occupation, expressing concerns about the inability to meet sustainable development requirements and the violation of human rights. He urged the international community to condemn the situation in Gaza and emphasised the need for immediate measures to halt the ongoing conflict.

Al Maawali also held discussions with Professor Dr Sahiba Kafrova, President of the Milli Council of Azerbaijan, exploring opportunities to strengthen relations between the two countries in economic, cultural, and investment domains. The delegation also actively participated in the Executive Council meeting, reviewing draft decisions on various crucial aspects, including economic affairs, sustainable development, budget and planning, social and cultural affairs, and political matters. - ONA
