Oman’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals is embarking on the development of a National Energy Model aimed at formulating a sophisticated roadmap for the country’s energy future.

An inaugural workshop on the initiative was hosted recently by Eng Mohsen Hamad al Hadhrami, Ministry Under-Secretary. In attendance were representatives of government and public sector stakeholder organisations, leading energy companies, universities and R&D institutions, and energy consultancies.

Underlining the significance of the initiative in a post, the Ministry said the proposed National Energy Model will serve as a powerful tool for, among other things, simulating the impact of future energy policies and investments on the national energy landscape.

Additionally, the modelling framework will help identify optimal pathways for meeting Oman's growing energy demand. Furthermore, it will facilitate informed decision-making for a sustainable energy future.

Addressing the workshop, Al Hadhrami said the initiative attests to the Omani government’s commitment to building a robust and resilient energy sector. Besides promoting diversification and innovation in the energy mix, the modelling framework will also ensure that the growth of the sector aligns with Oman’s 2040 Vision.

To help oversee the delivery of this strategic initiative, a dedicated modelling team is proposed to be established with representatives from various energy industry stakeholder organisations. This specialized team will spearhead the development and ongoing maintenance of the National Energy Model, according to the Ministry.

Additionally, a high-level Advisory Board comprising leading experts will also be constituted to provide invaluable guidance and oversight to the Modelling Team, thereby ensuring the model's accuracy and effectiveness.

When completed, tentatively in about a year’s time, the National Energy Model will closely consider Oman's ambitious goals for economic diversification, environmental sustainability, and energy security, the Ministry noted.
