OHRC concludes participation in global conference

DOHA: A delegation from the Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) headed by Dr Rashid bin Hamad al Balushi, Chairman of OHRC, concluded its participation in the International Conference on Food Justice from a Human Rights Perspective, which was held in Doha under the auspices of Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar.


The conference was organised by the Qatari National Human Rights Committee, in partnership with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions, the United Nations Development Programme, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the League of Arab States. It aimed to provide a global dialogue platform for the exchange of knowledge and experiences, building capacities and reviewing legislation, policies, plans and programmes concerned with food justice, and developing the basis and frameworks for organisations working in the field of food and human rights.


Dr Al Balushi presided over the third session of the second day. He also presented a working paper that dealt with the role of national human rights institutions, non-governmental organisations, civil society and stakeholders in enforcing the right to food and food justice according to a human rights-based approach. The role of the OHRC in cooperating with contractual, non-contractual and regional mechanisms and developing the role of the committee through monitoring, documenting and writing reports.


In his working paper, the chairman of the OHRC indicated that the OHRC monitored the efforts of the Sultanate of Oman in promoting the right to food as the Sultanate of Oman ranked third in the Arab world in the 2022 World Food Security Index report issued by the British magazine The Economist in 2023. Besides, the OHRC also monitored the strengthening of the food security system during the course of last year through the opening and establishment of many projects in various sectors concerned with agriculture, livestock, fish and water resources.


The OHRC’s delegation comprised Maimouna bint Said al Sulaimaniyah, member of OHRC; Sulaiman bin Saif al Kindi, member of OHRC; Abdulaziz bin Abdullah al Saadi, member of OHRC and Ahmed bin Nasser al Rashdi, Director of the Department of Monitoring and Receiving Reports at OHRC.
