GENEVA: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Social Development, discussed its fourth national report on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva on Wednesday.
The Sultanate of Oman’s delegation was headed by Dr Laila bint Ahmed al Najar, Minister of Social Development and Chairperson of the CEDAW Committee.
The minister highlighted various achievements that have been made in order to empower women in the Sultanate of Oman, their active role in society and the provision of all types of protection and care for them.
She stressed that the Sultanate of Oman is acting in accordance with its strategic plans to continue developing national legislation and affirming rights in favour of empowering women in society and their positive participation in nation building and development. These plans come in line with Oman’s principles of upholding women and non-discrimination and as part of the country’s obligations to implement the provisions of this convention granted by the basic law of the state, as well as other similar agreements that support women’s rights, which the Sultanate of Oman has joined, especially those related to human rights, in implementation of the recommendations that the Sultanate of Oman accepted when discussing its national human rights report.
The minister pointed out that the Sultanate of Oman has acceded to many conventions, such as the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, and the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. Oman also acceded by Royal Decree No (16/ 2023) to the Arab Charter on Human Rights.
The meeting was attended by members of the participating delegation, including representatives of the ministries of social development, health, education, agriculture, fisheries and water resources, labour, economy, the Muscat Court of First Instance, the Public Prosecution Department, and the National Centre for Statistics and Information. - ONA
