Germany, New Zealand make semis in Olympic Qualifier

World Champions Germany sealed berth in the last four stage in the FIH Men’s Olympic Qualifier after they outclassed Chile 3-0 in a Pool B match at Hockey Oman Stadium in Al Amerat on Thursday. World No 5 ranked Germany with two wins and one draw are on seven points from three matches with a superior goal difference.


New Zealand booked the second spot of Pool B as they defeated Canada 4-0 in the another match at the same venue on Thursday. Chile ended the group stage in the third place with three points while Canada were placed in the bottom with no points.


The day three started with a match between Germany and Chile. Germany, who confidently began their campaign with a 9-0 win in the opener against Canada and then a 2-2 draw against New Zealand, entered the concluding group match with more focus to take the top spot in the group.


Germany’s Grambusch Tom put his team in the lead in the 15th minute from a penalty corner. Then, Peillat Gonzalo doubled the lead as he netted the second goal through a penalty corner. In the last quarter of the game, Weigand Justus confirmed the win as he struck the last goal in the 49th minute.


The second match saw New Zealand thrash Canada 4-0 on Thursday at Hockey Oman Stadium. The opening quarter was very strong as both teams had shots on target.


Smith Jake scored the opening goal in the sixth minute. At the end of first quarter, New Zealand led 1-0.


New Zealand players entered the second quarter confidently as Houlbrooke Isaac scored the second goal in the 21st minute. The domination of winning team continued as Lane Sam scored a field goal in the 23rd minute as New Zealand led 3-0 at the half-time.


Lnglis Hugo sealed the victory for New Zealand as he netted the fourth goal in the 42nd minute.


The teams will have a rest day on Friday and the semifinal matches will take place on Saturday besides the other positions play-off. The final will be held on Sunday along with the third and fourth play-off.
