Washington - American forces destroyed four anti-ship missiles in Yemen on Tuesday that threatened civilian and military vessels, the US military said.

It is at least the third time in less than a week that the United States has carried out strikes in Yemen, who have repeatedly aimed at merchant vessels in the vital Red Sea shipping lane.

"US forces struck and destroyed four anti-ship ballistic missiles," the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.

"These missiles presented an imminent threat to both merchant and US Navy ships in the region," CENTCOM said.

The United States and Britain targeted nearly 30 sites in Yemen with more than 150 munitions last week, while American forces later attacked a radar site in what was described as "a follow-on action" related to the previous strikes.

Japanese shipping firm Nippon Yusen said Wednesday it is joining other major companies in suspending routes through the Red Sea over Huthi rebel attacks on vessels in the vital waterway. "We have suspended navigation through the Red Sea by all ships we operate," a spokesman for the firm, also known as NYK Line, told AFP, adding the decision was to "ensure the safety of crews.
