MUSCAT: Wheat production in the Sultanate of Oman surged by 229 per cent during agricultural season 2022/2023 to a total of 7,119 tonnes, compared to 2,169 tonnes during agricultural season 2021/2022.


Statistics issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources show wheat was grown on a total area of 6,359 acres of land during agricultural season 2022/2023, an increase of 160 per cent over the previous season. The number of wheat farmers also grew by 24 per cent, the ministry reported.


According to the report, Dhofar Governorate took the lead in wheat production with 5,940 tonnes or 83 per cent of the total volume of production followed by Al Dakhiliyah Governorate (801 tonnes), Al Dhahirah Governorate (249 tonnes), Al Buraimi Governorate (38 tonnes), North Al Batinah Governorate (35 tonnes), North Al Sharqiyah Governorate (33 tonnes), South Al Batinah Governorate (16 tonnes), Musandam Governorate (2.4 tonnes), South Al Sharqiyah Governorate (2.3 tonnes) and Muscat Governorate (0.7 tonnes).


The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Oman Flour Mills to enhance the purchase of locally produced wheat from Omani farmers during the harvest season. The company received 5,000 tonnes of wheat during 2022/2023 farming season.
